What Are Nootropics?
Nootropics have been around for a very long time, traditional practices like Ayurveda have long utilized many ingredients which are now recognized in scientific literature for their cognitive benefits. But the list of proven nootropic ingredients has expanded significantly since Dr Corneliu Giurgea first coined the term nootropic [1], following his work to synthesize Piracetam. In general terms, the word nootropic is used to describe substances known to support the brain and how it works, for example improving memory, clarity of thought, cognitive performance and brain health.
For the most part, nootropics work by improving how well the brain works. Different nootropics work in different ways, for example by optimizing brain chemistry, balancing hormone levels, improving oxygen levels, supporting brain activity or supporting overall brain health.
Different Types of Nootropics
There are many different nootropic substances, but they can be classified into four main types. Firstly, natural nootropics [2] are ingredients often derived from plants and other natural means, for example L-Theanine and Bacopa Monnieri. Natural nootropics include herbs, vitmains, minerals and some amino acids. Next, there are synthetic nootropics [3] - Racetams such as Piracetam typically act on neurotranmitters, often these fall into the next category of Prescription nootropics, but it varies by country. Prescription nootropics include stimulants such as Adderall and other ADHD medications. Other forms include Modafinil which is prescribed to treat sleep disorders such as narcolepsy [4]. Prescription nootropics often have adverse side effects and should only be taken under medical supervision.
The final group is nootropic supplements. Unlike prescription nootropics, these are readily available but can still be highly effective in bolstering cognitive performance and improving brain health. The best products available utilize many different nootropic substances to provide a wide range of cognitive benefits. It's important to look for products which use clinically proven amounts of each ingredient and which provide transparent label information showing exactly what's included.

The Best Nootropic Supplements
1. ThinkEase - The Best Nootropic Overall
ThinkEase is positioned as a comprehensive nootropic supplement and as such includes more ingredients, in larger amounts than virtually any other nootropic supplement I've come across. This means it actually is capable of supporting multiple aspects of cognitive performance, including focus, memory, mental clarity and overall brain heath. Its formulation includes 6 different blends, each of which target a different area. The formulation uses 15 different nootropic ingredients in total, each one dosed in line with the latest clinical research. It's also the only clean label nootropic supplement on the market.

My Professional and Personal Observations
Having used ThinkEase as instructed for several months, it's effectiveness isn't in doubt. I found the product led to clear and consistent increases in my cognitive performance. Perhaps most notably, on days where the mental demands on me were highest, I found I was able to sustain high levels of concentration for extended periods without becoming overly tired or distracted. I think this can be attributed to the combination of N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine, Rhodiola and L-Theanine - which facilitated more focused work.
I also noticed recall was improved, especially when writing up detailed reports, or when learning technical information. The combination of Bacopa and Cicicoline worked as well as the science has shown when they're correctly dosed. It's also worth noting that my mental energy felt elevated during my test period, but just as importantly it was a calm focused state, helped by ThinkEase being caffeine-free. I felt that the combination of ingredients used across the Clarity Complex and Learning Booster blends made a significant difference during long working sessions, especially when being mental sharp and focused was necessary.
Whilst my scientific assessment already suggested ThinkEase would work well, it was nonetheless impressive to see the formulation's potential translate into tangible real world benefits in line with the brand's claims.

Learning Booster: Acetyl L-Carnitine (750 mg), Lion’s Mane Powder (550 mg)
Productivity Enhancer: Vitamin B6 (2.5 mg, 147% DV), Vitamin B9 (Folate, 100 mcg DFE, 25% DV), Vitamin B12 (Methylcobalamin, 7.5 mcg, 313% DV)
Brain Health Formula: Phosphatidylserine 20% (100 mg)
Other ingredients: Organic Nu Flow, Premium Grade Pullulan Capsule.
Scientific Assessment
ThinkEase's ingredient list uses a wide range of nootropic ingredients, each of which have been extensively researched and shown to have significant cognitive benefits when used in the correct amounts. Thankfully, ThinkEase have done their homework and each ingredient is included in the correct amounts - information which is openly shared on the label.
Focus Blend
- N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine works to sustain mental performance, particularly when under stress or in demanding situations [6]. It's an amino acid and it's a precursor to catecholamine neurotransmitters, most notably dopamine and norepinephrine.
- Rhodiola Extract is a very well-known and proven adaptogen. It has a number of benefits, including improving stress response [7], meaning focus is more easily achieved and performance is more production even in difficult situations.
- L-Theanine works by helping the brain reach a calm (rather than anxious) focused state. It does so by balancing excitatory neurotransmitter activity [8].
Memory Matrix
- Bacopa Monnieri has been shown to provide memory support in a wide range of clinical studies. Supplementing Bacopa regularly can help with retention of memories and cognitive processing speed [9].
- Citicoline helps maintain energy levels in the brain, as well as aiding the synthesis of phospholipids [10] - this is essential for neuron health and communication.
- Spanish Sage works by improving mental clarity and has also been used extensively in traditional medicine as a memory aid.
Clarity Complex
- Ginkgo Biloba has been shown in research to improve cerebral blood flow - important in maintaining healthy cognitive function and improving alertness, especially when stressed [11].
- Pine Bark Extract is known to work in tackling oxidative stress, which in turn is a major driver of cognitive decline, as well as helping overall brain health.
- Korean Ginseng can help improve mental performance in difficult or stressful situations.
Learning Booster
- Acetyl L-Carnitine is rarely included in nootropic supplements, due to its cost and the amount required to be effective. It's a highly beneficial nootropic ingredient as it works to increase mitochondrial energy and in turn increase mental processing speed [12].
- Lion's Mane Powder - many nootropic supplements use inadequate amounts of Lion's Mane, but ThinkEase uses more than any others I've tested and in line with the most recent clinical research into its effects. It's a really beneficial nootropic ingredient when correctly dosed, as it works to increase Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), which in turn increases brain plasticity [13]. It also works to improve long-term brain health.
Productivity Enhancer
- ThinkEase uses a combination of B-Vitamins, which is good to see, namely B6, B9 and B12. These are vitally important for the health of your nervous system and in metabolizing energy. This then helps sustain productivity and combat mental fatigue.
Brain Health Formula
- Phosphatidylserine is vital for communication between the brain's neurons and maintaining overall brain health.
Summary
There's no doubt that ThinkEase is the most comprehensive and effective nootropic I've tested. The combination of a wide range of nootropic ingredients in clinically proven amounts - plus a much larger amount of active ingredients than any other product translates into a highly effective nootropic supplement. My professional assessment and personal experience have both confirmed that the product works well in improving focus, memory, clarity of thought as well as a number of other facets of cognitive health and mental performance. As such I don't have any hesitation is recommending it as the best nootropic supplement currently available.
2. Mind Vitality - Second Best Nootropic
As a neuroscience professional and nootropics expert, I've assessed and tested numerous most nootropic supplements. Mind Vitality is a good option. Whilst not the very best it does a good all round job. It works by focusing on improving memory, focus and overall brain performance. Its formulation is well thought through for the most part, including ingredients such as Lion's Mane, Bacopa Monnieri, N-Acetyl L-Tyrosin, Choline and others. It's worth being aware that it doesn't include some of the most exciting ingredients found in ThinkEase - that means no Acetyl L-Carnitine, no Citicoline, no L-Theanine, no Spanish Sage. As such it's a less comprehensive and less effective product, hence why I've rated it as the runner-up to ThinkEase.

My Professional and Personal Observations
I found Mind Vitality to be fairly effective overall. It worked to provide some noticeable improvements to focus and recall. The amount of Lion's Mane is lower than ThinkEase but it still provides some benefit. I'm somewhat ambivalent when it comes to nootropic supplements including ashwagandha - it can work to provide a sense of calm, but relatively speaking it's not really a nootropic ingredient and its effects are more noticeable when taken in greater amounts than is possible with a blended nootropic supplement.
The absence of L-Theanine is probably Mind Vitality's greatest issue. Without it the other ingredients struggle to replicate the sense of calm focus it provides. Mind Vitality isn't unusual for not including Acetyl L-Carnitine, but its absence was noticeable when compared with ThinkEase. The fairly low dosage of Ginkgo is also a slight disappointment. Overall I found it worked well, better than most in fact, but it's also fair to say my experience of Mind Vitality fell someway short of the results experienced with ThinkEase.
Mind Vitality Ingredients
Lion's Mane (500mg), Bacopa Monnieri (300mg), N-Acetyle L-Tyrosene (250mg), Choline (250mg), Ashwagandha (200mg), Rhodiola Extract (200mg), Ginseng Korean (100mg), Phosphatidylserine (100mg), Mucuna Extract (75mg), Pine Bark Extract (75mg), Ginkgo Biloba (50mg), Huperzia Serrata (200mcg), B1 (Thiamine HCL) (100mg), B3 (Niacin) (12.5mg), Vitamin B6 (5mg), Vitamin B9 (100mcg), Vitamin B12 (5mcg)
Other ingredients: Microcrystaline Cellulose, Croscarmellose Sodium, Stearic Acid, Magnesium Stearate, Di-tab.
Scientific Assessment
Mind Vitality is generally well formulated, by many ingredients are at the lower end of the ranges proven to be effective in scientific research. Mind Vitality uses a fairly braod range of ingredients, but it's limited overall amount of active ingredients means many ingredients are dosed lower than I'd ideally like to see.
Mind Vitality uses 500mg of Lion's Mane, the lowest level shown to be beneficial in studies. It's a reasonable amount but even a slightly higher dose would yield noticeably improved results [14]. The inclusion of Bacopa is always good to see in a nootropic supplement, 300mg is a good amount and aligns well with the clinical evidence - however (and it's a big one) it doesn't seem that Mind Vitality uses a standardized extract - this means the the effectiveness of the Bacopa used is unknown and may well be ineffective.
N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine is widely proven to help improve mental performance, particularly when stressed [15]. Mind Vitality's 250mg is slightly low, but should provide some benefit. The choice of Choline, rather than Citicoline is a bit disappointing and some other cholinergic agents are missing from Mind Vitality, but Choline will still help improve learning ability and memory at the level used.
Ashwagandha is helpful in reducing stress response [16], it's not my favorite nootropic ingredient for reasons I've already mentioned, but it will provide some benefit.
Ginkgo is underdosed in Mind Vitality raises questions over its effectiveness, the space may have been better used dosing another ingredient at effective levels. Pine Bark and Phosphatidylserine are present in the right amounts.
One ingredient I wish Mind Vitality didn't use is Huperzia Serrata, as it's not recommended to supplement with this ingredient for more than 6 months [17] - this renders Mind Vitality as a short-term solution, or one which is cycled with other nootropic supplements. And finally, rounding out Mind Vitality's ingredient list is a B-Vitamin complex, which will work to support overall brain function.
Summary
Mind Vitality is a good nootropic supplement, which works fairly well in improving focus and mental clarity and to some extent memory. It's a good option for people looking for a short-term bump in focus, but it doesn't offer the comprehensive results and more potent dosages offered by ThinkEase. One watch out is to ensure you don't supplement with Mind Vitality for extended periods, due to its inclusion of Huperzia Serrata.
3. NooCube - Third Best Nootropic
NooCube has been around for some time and reformulated a year ago. The changes made improved the product somewhat, not least by removing two allergens. It also offers eye protection, a unique claim, but perhaps not entirely relevant in a nootropic supplement. NooCube has a fairly well balanced formulation - predominantly focusing on just that, focus. It does claim other benefits, but its modest serving size and more limited ingredient profile makes it a less effective product than those further up this list.

My Professional and Personal Observations
It's fair to say that NooCube offers a good range of general nootropic ingredients, which can and do lead to some improvement to focus and even mental clarity. The most notable ingredients are L-Theanine, Panax Ginseng and L-Tyrosine. Whilst I did experience an mild but nonetheless tangible shift in focus with NooCube, it's important to state that several of the ingredients it does use present in sub-optimal amounts. Bacopa Monnieri is essentially under-dosed when compared with clinical research. Pterostilbene and Resveratrol are also present only in modest amounts, meaning they're unlikely to be effective, or contributing in any significant way to the results I experienced. As I mentioned NooCube does make claims that it protects eye health with an ingredient not used in many nootropics, but they hide the amount used - this likely means it's underdosed as there's no other reason to hide this information when every other ingredient is transparently declared. The range of ingredients used in NooCube is quite limited, but what is there makes sense.
NooCube Ingredients
LuteMax 2020 (undisclosed), Bacopa Monnieri (250mg), Panax Ginseng 200:1 Concentrate (20mg), Pterostilbene (140mcg), Resveratrol (14.3mg), L-theanine (100mg), L-tyrosine (250mg), Choline (250mg), Cat’s claw 4:1 Concentrate, Vitamin B1 (1.1mg), Vitamin B7 (50mcg), Vitamin B12 (2.5mcg)
Other ingredients: Microcrystaline Cellulose Capsule Shell (Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose), Maltodextrin, Silica, Magnesium Stearate.
Scientific Assessment
Starting with NooCube's decision to include LuteMax 2020 presents me with a conundrum. Should I be impressed that the brand is offering an unusual benefit or skeptical because they hide how much is actually included? As a scientist I'm trained to be objective and rely on factual information - as such in this case I have to be skeptical as there's no evidence that the amount used will actually provide any meaningful benefit. This is a shame as even small amounts of lutein can be helpful, but too little simply won't be [18].
NooCube's formulation does a good job with several other ingredients however. Panax Ginseng is effectively dosed [19], as are Vitamins B1, B7 and B12.
The limited overall serving size of NooCube does lead to several key ingredients being present in too small amounts. Only 250mg of Bacopa Monnieri is included, only 14.3mg of Resveratrol, only 100mg of L-Theanine and just 250mg of L-Tyrosine - these amounts are all below the levels shown to be effective in clinical studies [20]. This means their effects in NooCube will be muted or imperceptible compred with supplements that are more closely aligned with the scientific research.
Another less commonly used ingredient found in NooCube is Cat's Claw Extract [21]. It may help with overall brain health, but its effects are well studied or documented.
Summary
NooCube provides a reasonably balanced combination of nootropic ingredients. It uses a lower total amount (and number) of ingredients than ThinkEase and Mind Vitality. Given it predominantly works to improve focus this isn't a huge issue, but the underdosing of several key ingredients isn't ideal. Overall, its a good nootropic supplement, but a more basic formulation, with some notable limitations renders it third in my assessment of the best nootropic supplements available. If you just want to try out a mild nootropic and mainly want to increase your ability to focus it's worth a try in my view.

Overall Assessment
Nootropic substances span a range of different forms. If you suffer from a prescribed medical condition, a prescibed nootropic is something a medical professional may suggest. For those simply looking for cognitive support to improve their learning, memory, ability to focus or maintain cognitive performance and health as they age, there are a range of nootropic ingredients available that can improve brain health and mental performance.
For many, the most effective and simplest solution is an all-in-one nootropic supplement. These can be a great way to realize the benefits of nootropics, without having to develop a complex individual regime, which also risks adverse effects from negative ingredient interactions and possible over-supplementation.
Of all the nootropic supplements I've tested, ThinkEase is both the most comprehensive and more effective. I found it to be very effective in enhancing memory, thinking skills, mental clarity and productivity. For anyone starting out, or more experienced users of nootropics it's perhaps the best option for you too.
