Dr. Alice Saperstein received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 2009 from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 2010 she was named a Marie Kessel Fellow and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She was granted a New York State Office of Mental Health Policy Scholar Award in 2011 to study recovery orientation and practice in state mental health clinics. She is currently Assistant Professor of Medical Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center.

Dr. Saperstein is a scientist-practitioner with expertise in cognitive remediation for people with serious mental illness. She currently directs a cognitive remediation program within the context of recovery-oriented outpatient psychiatric rehabilitation services. She is a co-investigator on NIMH-funded research studies that focus on designing effective methods of cognitive intervention for use in community settings. Dr. Saperstein is the program committee chair for the annual Cognitive Remediation in Psychiatry conference and has coordinated and led numerous workshops on designing and implementing cognitive remediation programs in public psychiatry settings. She has published on the empirical basis for the practice of cognitive remediation for people with schizophrenia, including research on the roles of motivation and neurocognitive insight in cognitive learning.  Her professional efforts are geared towards identifying methods to maximize cognitive and functional gain during cognitive intervention, and integrating empirically-based practices to optimize recovery goal achievement for adults with mental illness living in the community.
